Retirement album for Headmistress

I was approached this Summer by a lovely school who wanted to dedicate an album to a wonderful head teacher who as retiring at the end of the year.

It was an amazing album to work on – collated into years, it contained artwork and letters  from every child at the school, memories on post cards from parents, teachers and staff and diary entries from the previous Headmasters describing the career of the now retiring Head.

The opening page

The school provided graphics and photos from around the school, art cards found in the Head’s office and key words that represented the ethos of the school. All were incorporated in to the album.

There was so much material, I simply couldn’t fit it all on the pages so I crafted white folded inserts to slip into the album, these folded out and housed every piece of artwork.

The school were very keen to make the album as personal as possible so I crafted two bespoke albums to house the pages and the additional material. The theme was one of the sea and relaxation. I crafted a bespoke box to the back and printed both the cover and the lining of the albums.

New Project – Interactive album

Anyone who follows me will know that I am always developing new products.

I received a request from a lovely lady in Malta regarding an ‘interactive’ album. Would I be interested in crafting a bespoke one for her? I had never crafted an album like this before but was willing to give it a go. The principles are the same as any album – design, colour, structure and finish are all as important – what was needed here was to learn some paper folding techniques and understand how to get interactive sections onto the page.

I set about crafting the first few pages ….

All in all I was really pleased with how it turned out, especially as this was my first interactive album. I nervously posted it out to my client and waited.

I wasn’t disappointed, I received this lovely testimonial..

Marry Me (with a hidden gem!)

We met Eugene, a lovely client from Parsons Green when we were delivering a large album to clients in Chelsea. Eugene was not your average guy. He didn’t just want to use my Marry Me Package to propose to his girlfriend, he wanted the ring somehow embedded into the album itself.

Never one to shy away from a challenge, I set about working out exactly how to do this and to make it look good. he wanted to use a grey and yellow colour scheme which was lucky as I had some beautiful book cloth in both a mid grey and deep yellow in stock. I also had some fantastic hinges which I had picked up some time ago and had wondered how I could incorporate them into a layout or album.

It all came together surprisingly well …

The album was a huge success and of course she said ‘YES!”

Adventure album for the trip of a lifetime

A wonderful bespoke travel company, Brown & Hudson, commissioned me to design and craft albums for a client travelling to Ecuador and The Galapagos Islands for a trip of a lifetime.

The brief was very detailed – 3 albums with similar artwork but personalised to each individual, were to contain pages for a diary and events on a daily basis in phases of the trip, pages to record the different species seen, pages for photos and notes and species reference pages so the children could identify each species they saw on their trip.

It was a complex brief but I was happy to oblige.

The front artwork took the form of one of my canvas covered albums, the interior was lined with hard wearing black book cloth. The design reflected the trip and included elements personal to each family member.

The rear artwork continued the theme from the front, shown here with Brown and Hudson’s logo…

The internal pages were pre-printed with details of each phase of the trip.

There was lots of  space to keep a diary and notes about the highlights of each day.

Printed species sheets for each of the 4 phases are laminated to protect the printed pages from being affected by the humidity – a small but serious detail to consider.

These really were amazing albums to work on and brought together many elements from different aspects of my work – a real self indulgence you could say!

Brown and Hudson were delighted with the albums too, which was a huge bonus!

Felt like trying felt … crafting albums with wool

I’m always on the look out for new materials to cover my albums with. Some just don’t work for a variety of reasons – some are way too thick, some are way too expensive and others are just way too out there. I also have to make sure that I can glue them to the board and feel confident that they will stay on the board – never an easy task!

However, I do have this love affair with felt – it has a beautiful texture and can be used in all manner of crafts; I have a felt pin board on Pinterest which I frequently visit for inspiration and well, just to pass a few creative minutes.

It can be a tricky material, thick, stretchy, fibrous – I should walk away from it but I just love it far too much. I decided to test it out. I glued it to one of my standard album boards to see how it would adhere and whether it would stay on it, especially after being in the sun for a while. I need not have feared, it was a dream to work with.

I set about designing an album using a gorgeous deep rose pink sample. I covered the spine in the felt and the rest of the album in a beautiful French perfumerie paper; decoration was gorgeous vintage lace trims, a paper flower, diamond brad, miniature shoe and an oversized Eiffel Tower trinket.

I was really delighted with how it turned out and popped it into the shop at Cherry Tree Interiors in Harborne as a sample album. A week later I had my first commission based on the design.

The client who ordered the album was over the moon with the finished product and sent me a quick email to let me know.

**NEW** printed canvas covered albums hit the store!

After months of thinking about it, and endless weeks of sourcing, working out the technicalities and producing pieces for a few brave people who agreed (for a discounted price) to be guinea pigs – my bespoke canvas covered album are now available to order.

As with most of my products, they came about from an enquiry from a client for a scrapbook album cover that would have a Word Art on the front. I had seen canvas printed photographic albums but nothing for scrapbookers, and I had played around with the idea of a photograph with a few personalisations but hadn’t considered a full blown Word Art.

The Word Art, it turned out, was the easy bit – relatively speaking; the difficulty would be in getting a print that could withstand being glued to hard board, maintain its colour and shape and endure everyday wear and tear. Then there was the adhesive … hmmm, wasn’t that a fun (and expensive trial!)

But I ploughed through the tantrums and strops and finally got it to work.

Here is my first album, a vintage style cover in greens and blues was the remit, along with a photo and a Word Art – so very pleased with how it turned out ….

New Art Deco photographic album

It has been such a surprise to me to see how popular my new photographic albums have become. Orders have been steadily coming in and I have been given the opportunity to play around with new sizes, new styles and finishes – it’s been so exciting.

An order came in last week from a lovely client in Surrey who wanted to gift her father a handcrafted photographic album for Christmas. My choice of papers is expanding so it was great to offer this beautiful black and silver handmade Indian cotton paper.

Vivid wrap

My client was happy for me to come up with a design for the album which is always lovely . The only requests were for ribbon and an album plate to the front cover. I set to work.

The album contained black photographic deckle-edged leaves and cloud glassine paper sheets as with previous albums. It suited the Art Deco style perfectly.

The album was finished with a thick black grosgrain ribbon and crafted bow secured with a large black brad, a simple but decorative finish – perfect for a gentleman.  The simple addition of a tag and black elasticated ribbon to the spine finished it off.

I was delighted with the result. As soon as I finish one of these albums, I want to start another straight away – the finished product pleases me no end.

If you fancy owning (or gifting) an album like this, customised or personalised to your own requirements, hop along to my shop. In the meantime, have a look at what my client had to say about the album when she received it.

Craft and sewing classes now available!

As we venture into our 2nd month in our new home at Cherry Tree Interiors, I thought it was high time we sat down and thought about the classes we should run.

We chatted to our new customers as they wandered around the shop during the opening weeks and the most common demand seemed to be for our bunting and cushion workshops – so they were definitely on our list. There was also great interest in paper crafting and scrapbooking, so these have been added on too.

All of our classes run during the day and some are also run in the evening, so even if you’re tied up with work (or the kids) during the day, our evening classes will give you that opportunity to chill out, make some pretty awesome stuff and socialise with like-minded people.

We will be adding to the list of courses available over the coming months. Some suggestions for courses have been photography basics (adults and children), knitting, crocheting and learning how to use your sewing machine; check in from time to time or Email me! to send us suggestions of courses you would like to see offered or subscribe to our newsletter.

Full listing and booking information can be found here, or you can pop in and see us at the shop.

We look forward to seeing you all!

New handcrafted albums hit the shelves

Well, we’ve finally settled in. It’s been a busy couple of weeks here at Cherry Tree Interiors but the response has been absolutely phenomenal. Lots of lovely people have already come in for a nose and a browse and made all the right ‘ooh’,  ‘ahh’ and ‘wow’ sounds. We have been quite overwhelmed by it all!

Amidst all the excitement and running around, business has resumed as normal and I have been busy crafting some new albums. One was commissioned by a lovely grandfather who wanted to gift an album to his 7 year old grand-daughter to fill with her stories, drawings and memories – such an amazing idea!

I loved the pretty purple paper with the angels on it, so befitting a 7 year old!

The other album I crafted was for stock for the shop. I had acquired this gorgeous green indian handmade paper some time ago and have been itching to craft something with it. The metal plaques are hardware that we removed from a regency cabinet. A good clean and a polish and I have some fab unusual plates to play with. How fab!

This gorgeous album was so popular we sold out within weeks,  so sorry! Check back though as we are always updating our stock and designs.
